Brda, Soča & Nova Gorica Loop

Experience the best of western Slovenia on this scenic 40.5 km loop that combines rolling vineyards, historic villages, panoramic viewpoints, the emerald Soča River, and two cultures in one ride. Starting in Ceglo, in the heart of the Brda wine region, this route is perfect for cyclists looking for a rewarding half-day adventure with plenty of memorable stops. The ride begins with a gentle climb through the vineyards to the medieval village of Šmartno, one of Slovenia's best-preserved fortified villages. From there, continue to Gonjače, where you'll be rewarded with one of the finest panoramic views in the region. Climb the observation tower to enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panorama stretching across the Brda hills, the Julian Alps, the Vipava Valley, and even to the Adriatic Sea on a clear day. After soaking in the views, enjoy a long, flowing descent towards the Soča River, reaching the village of Plave. The emerald waters of the Soča provide a striking contrast to the vineyard-covered hills you've just left behind. The route then follows the river south to Solkan, home to the famous Solkan Bridge. Completed in 1905, it boasts the world's longest stone railway arch, spanning 85 metres. It remains an impressive feat of engineering and one of the most iconic landmarks along the Soča Valley. From Solkan, continue into the twin towns of Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and Gorizia (Italy), where you can effortlessly cross the border and experience two countries in a single ride. The vibrant squares, cafés, and unique blend of Slovenian and Italian culture make this section a highlight of the route. The final kilometres lead you back through the vineyards of Brda to Ceglo, completing a beautiful circular ride that perfectly showcases the diversity of this border region. This route is ideal for recreational and experienced road cyclists alike, offering moderate climbs, quiet roads, spectacular scenery, and a rich mix of natural beauty, history, and culture.
