Parenzana Slovenia

Parenzana is one of the most beautiful and popular cycling routes in Slovenia, following the former narrow-gauge railway that once connected Trieste and Poreč. Today, this historic railway line has been transformed into a scenic cycling and walking trail known as the “Route of Health and Friendship.” The Slovenian section of the trail passes through the coastal region of Slovenian Istria, connecting towns such as Koper, Izola, Strunjan, Portorož, and Sečovlje, while offering breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea, vineyards, olive groves, tunnels, and old railway bridges. The Parenzana cycling route is suitable for recreational cyclists, families, and more experienced riders alike. Most of the Slovenian section is paved and well maintained, providing a safe and enjoyable ride through nature and along the Mediterranean coastline. Highlights of the route include illuminated tunnels, panoramic viewpoints above Strunjan, and scenic stretches near the Sečovlje Salt Pans, where visitors can experience the unique landscape of Slovenian Istria. Parenzana is not only a cycling experience, but also a journey through history. The railway was originally built in 1902 during the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was used to transport wine, olive oil, salt, and other local goods between Istrian towns. After the railway closed in 1935, the route remained abandoned for decades before Slovenia, Croatia, and Italy collaborated to restore it into one of Europe’s most attractive cross-border cycling trails. Today, Parenzana offers the perfect combination of active travel, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. Thanks to its gentle climbs, well-developed infrastructure, and numerous attractions along the way, it is an ideal destination for both a relaxing day trip and a multi-day cycling adventure through Slovenian Istria.
