Vršič Pass - Mangart Loop

The Vršič Pass – Mangart Loop is one of the most spectacular cycling loops in Slovenia and also one of the most demanding alpine cycling experiences in the region. Many consider it the royal cycling tour of Slovenia, as it combines two legendary mountain climbs and delivers one of the most complete road cycling experiences in the Alps. The route connects Kranjska Gora, Vršič Pass (1,611 m), and Mangart Saddle (1,909 m), taking cyclists deep into the heart of the Julian Alps. The route typically starts in Kranjska Gora, from where the ascent begins toward the legendary Vršič Pass, the highest road pass in Slovenia. A series of more than 50 hairpin bends, some still paved with historic cobblestones, offers constant views of the Triglav mountain range and the Soča Valley. After descending into the Trenta Valley or Bovec, the route continues toward Loška Koritnica and the base of Mount Mangart. The second part of the loop is even more dramatic. The climb to Mangart Saddle is considered the highest paved road in Slovenia and one of the most scenic cycling roads in Europe. The road winds through alpine meadows, rock tunnels, and open mountain plateaus, with continuous views of the Julian Alps and the Italian border region. The loop combines two completely different characters: the historic, serpentine Vršič Pass and the modern, open, and dramatic Mangart road. Together, they create one of the ultimate “bucket list” road cycling challenges in Slovenia. The route is suitable for experienced road cyclists with strong fitness, as it includes long climbs, technical descents, and significant elevation gain. In return, it offers one of the most impressive combinations of mountains, roads, and views in the entire Alps.
