Mangart Saddle from Bovec
The ride from Bovec to Mangart Saddle is widely considered one of the most spectacular road cycling climbs in Europe. Following Slovenia's highest paved panoramic road, this unforgettable ascent takes riders deep into the heart of the Julian Alps, passing dramatic cliffs, carved mountain tunnels, endless switchbacks and breathtaking alpine scenery. The route starts in Bovec and follows the Koritnica Valley toward Log pod Mangartom before reaching the junction for Mangart Road. From there, the real climb begins. Over approximately 12 kilometres, cyclists gain nearly 1,000 metres of elevation on gradients that frequently range between 8% and 15%, making it one of Slovenia's most demanding and rewarding ascents. The final kilometres pass through iconic tunnels carved directly into the mountain before reaching the summit at around 2,040 metres above sea level. The reward is a breathtaking panoramic view across the Julian Alps, the Koritnica Valley and neighbouring Italy. The descent follows the same road back to Bovec. Due to narrow sections, tunnels and numerous hairpin bends, riders should descend carefully and remain aware of changing mountain conditions.
