D-2 Slovenia

D-2 is one of the most popular long-distance cycling routes in Slovenia, connecting the alpine region of northwestern Slovenia with the central part of the country and further east towards the Croatian border. The route starts in Rateče near the Italian border and follows the Sava River through Kranjska Gora, Jesenice, Radovljica, Ljubljana, Zidani Most, and all the way to Brežice. In total, it covers approximately 240 kilometres and offers a highly diverse cycling experience. In the north, cyclists are surrounded by alpine valleys and views of the Julian Alps, while the route gradually descends through river valleys, forests, and urban areas towards the capital. One of the most famous sections is the Upper Sava cycling path between Rateče and Mojstrana, which runs on a former railway line and is fully separated from motor traffic. D-2 is designed for a wide range of cyclists, from recreational riders to bikepacking and touring enthusiasts. Most of the route is paved or follows dedicated cycling infrastructure, with some quieter regional road sections in the central and eastern parts. Along the way, cyclists pass through well-known places such as Kranjska Gora, Bled, Ljubljana, and the Krško–Brežice region, creating a dynamic contrast between mountains, river landscapes, and historic towns. Thanks to its connectivity and variety, D-2 is considered one of the key cycling corridors in Slovenia and an excellent choice for multi-day cycling trips across the country.
